How is the planning application going?
    All the best. Chad

    • Gwyn ap Harri says:

      Hi Chad,

it’s taken 8 1/2 weeks longer than it should have, but it looks like we’ll get it today / tomorrow. I’m not holding my breath though, I thought that 8 weeks ago….

  2. chad says:

    hi Gwyn,
hope all’s going well. Like the wine rack! Michaela says good luck, and can’t wait to come round for tea.

Any idea when you will be in? Have you chosen a kitchen yet?

ps- We like Kates hair natural.

    All the best

    • Gwyn ap Harri says:

Hi Chad, thanks! we’ve still no real idea in terms of timescale until we get the main structure up, but because we’ll be out of the ground next week, we might have a better idea. Still aiming for your birthday (next year though…)

Kitchen? We’ve not decided on the windows yet! But I think we’ll be going for a gloss white handless minimal thing. It’s pretty simple because it’s against one wall with an island. Def getting an induction hob though…

How do you know about Kate’s hair? And how do you know that’s her natural colour? Chad???

  4. Rich says:

    Hi,
Just wanted to express my appreciation of your restoration. Having been a Thorne resident for the past six years i have often walked past this building and thought what a shame it was to see such a grand building left to decay.
I’ve stumbled across this site and am so pleased to find that you are creating a beautiful family home as i would have put money on this being redeveloped into flats.
Thank you for taking the time to document the development in a way that enables me to be so nosey (lol).

I wish you all the best on completion and hope you and your family have many happy years in your new home.

    Rich

  5. Dave D'Silva-Collins says:

Hi Gwyn, A friend of mine posted a link to this site and it grabbed my attention because although Merlins was slightly before my clubbing days my older brothers would go. I’ve lived in London since our paths briefly passed(2001/2002) when we both worked in Hatfield with those games of football on a Friday afternoon. I have passed Merlins (as was) many times on my travels to visit my parents and it was sad to see the state the place was getting into. I had had the odd pipe dream of doing the place up myself had I not moved away (I could always see it had potential) but I thought it needed too much doing. You’ve done a great job and I’m glad you’ve got the garden you wanted. All the best. Dave

  6. Sara says:

    WOW.. Congratulations to you all.
I worked for many years as a supplier of lamps and lampshades around the world and saw and worked on some amazing projects but this is beyond great.. how I would have loved to have worked with you guys on this project.
I, like a lot of other people I am sure, wish you a very happy life living in this house.
    With best wishes.
    Sara.

  7. Mark Tomlinson says:

    Best wishes Mark

  8. Great project

Have pinched some of the names on the right, for our own somewhat lesser project, due to start shortly

    Good luck!

  9. ADRIAN HATTERSLEY says:

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. My parents live in Thorne and called me to tell me Grand Design was featuring your house. Loved the program and your house and just wanted to say you should be very proud of what you’ve done, it’s great for Thorne. I drove past yesterday, first time in ages and saw your amazing transformation. I’m 46 and used to walk past the Picture House on my way to and from Fieldside First School.
I’m a property developer/landlord and part time property photographer now and took on a similar derelict property about 12 years ago, it takes some guts, so well done both of you, enjoy your home.

    Regards

    Adrian (ex Thorne Grammar School)

    Best wishes Clive

  11. Hi Gwyn,

Just wanted to say, what a beautiful house you and your family have created. I watched the show the other nice and it’s nice to see people in the local area carefully restoring some of the original architecture rather than opting for a simple new build.

    Top quality job!

P.s. I’m always looking for locations for my next fashion shoot – hehe!

  12. JUST MY TASTE………………

  13. R Hoyle says:

Loved seeing what you have done with the old cinema – brave and imaginative, so well done!!! I don’t think there was much mention of how you have heated it etc – have you put underfloor in that lovely polished concrete and if so what heat source?

    • Gwyn ap Harri says:

Yes, it’s underfloor heating throughout. We looked at all the eco heat sourcing, and the only one we would have gone for would have been a trenched ground source, but our garden wasn’t big enough, so we’ve just got a very efficient gas boiler

  14. Neil Barton says:

    Congratulations Gwyn and Kate,
Outstanding restoration and beautiful finished product. Also one of the best Grand Designs programmes ever.

PS. Remember to drink Yorkshire Tea and take a concrete shower.

  15. Kieran Cleverley says:

What a fantastic project ! Enjoyed watching your story unfold on Grand Designs !

Hope you are all happy in your fantastic home and I hope one day I can find the funds to build mine !

All the best and happy “Concrete Showering”………don’t forget the Yorkshire tea !

  16. Nathan and Jellena says:

    Hello Gwynn and Kate,

We have just seen your lovely dwelling, in having just watched the first episode of Kevin’s new series of Grand Designs. In first having conducted a search for “Thorne cinema” out of interest and then in noticing your site, we just thought it couldn’t hurt to contact you with the following. Of all Kevin’s episodes, having watched from the very first episodes aired in Australia, we are in agreement to feeling that your build-project and therefore now home has been our favourite to date.

As well as appreciating your idea to renovate the facade and incorporate a contemporary home design, it really was touching to observe your efforts in putting something back into your local area. Hopefully you have inspired others not only in your region but to of a larger scale to attempt the same.

No doubt you have been graced with positivity and reassurance for your efforts along the way. We just thought a little further positivity shared couldn’t hurt from a couple of Grand Design fans in Australia. So great work you two and hope you and the lads are thoroughly enjoying your wonderful home. The “Gwyndow” was just one amazing feature of an inspiring construction.

    Best regards,
    Nathan and Jellena

P.S Appreciated the T2 camper in the backyard by the way, that just topped it for me. Happy Kombi-ing.

    • Gwyn ap Harri says:

Hi Nathan and Jellena, thanks for you very kind words! It’s sunny today in Thorne, the gwyndow is up, we’re pottering about in the garden and the kids and our new dog are playing outside. Couldn’t be happier!! Best wishes, Gwyn, Kate, Jac, Dylan and ‘Scrappy’…

  17. Jenny Jones says:

    Hi Gwyn & Kate,

We just watched your Grand Designs episode down under here in Oz and we love your home. You’ve done a fantastic job and should be really chuff with yourselves. You’ve done the cinema and Yorkshire proud!

    Jen & Pete

  18. Heather shepherd says:

Would dearly love to have a gwindow with just a wall of glass rather than in sections. Is this idea possible. Love heather

  19. Ian Austin says:

First, If all old picture houses were rebuilt like yours, and secondly is the owner relate to George Austin 1905 to 1975 from the Carlton in Goole

  20. I think that everything typed was actually very reasonable.
But, consider this, what if you added a little content?
I am not saying your content is not good., however suppose you added a title that makes people want more?

I mean Contact Us | Kensington – the old picture house, Thorne is
kinda plain. You ought to peek at Yahoo’s home
page and see how they create news titles to grab people to open the links.
You might try adding a video or a related picture or two to
get people excited about what you’ve written. Just my opinion, it might make
your posts a little bit more interesting.

    Dear Gwyn and Kate,

I am writing from Spain few minutes after I watched the documentary about your house in NETFLIX. Amazing project, Congratulations.

I have a doubt about the method to cover the roof and protect against leaks and so on….you mentioned that it is a new system in which you mix two components that become in a plastic layer or something like this…

I live in a City called Malgrat de Mar (Barcelona), it is not a rainy place but each two year we have leaks problems. Can you share with me the name of this method in order to find someone who can apply this method in my zone?

    Thanks in advance
    Pablo Temperini
